3MT Announcement

It's finally here.

The biggest GSA event of the year.

It's time for 3MT!

Thank you to everyone for your patience as we finalized all the details for this year's event. Here's what you need to know:

WHO? Any graduate student with a research project, no matter the stage of your research. Even if you're just starting out, we'd love to have you compete!

WHAT? The 3MT competition is held in universities around the world. Participants are challenged with the task of condensing their research into a three-minute speech. For those who have never participated in a 3MT before, it’s a great opportunity to come up with an “elevator pitch” on your research.

WHEN/WHERE? Heats are only open to competitors. Please only sign up for one of the heats as there are a limited number of spots available. Winners from each heat will be invited to compete in the finals, which are open to the public; so, come learn about all the incredible research being conducted by your fellow U of R graduate students! The deadline to register for the heats is February 20th at 11:59 pm. Please note - this year's finals will not be televised on Access Communications.

Heat 1: February 26th from 2:30-4:30 pm in AH 318 - sign up at
Heat 2: February 28th from 7-9 pm in CL 345 - sign up at
Finals: March 21st from 7:30-9:30 pm in RIC 119

Prizes, prizes, prizes! There are $3,500 in scholarships available to be won, including $1,500 for first place and a $500 people's choice award. The first-place winner has the opportunity to represent the U of R at the Western Regional Competition (travel, lodging, and registration expenses paid). Participants will also receive a small prize just for competing in the heats.

If you have any questions about this year's 3MT, feel free to contact us directly at

University of Regina Three Minute Thesis (3MT®)

Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a research communication competition developed by The University of Queensland (UQ) in Australia.  Students have three minutes to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance. 3MT is not an exercise in trivialising or "dumbing-down" research, but challenges students to consolidate their ideas and research discoveries so they can be presented concisely to a non-specialist audience.

At the U of R, 3MT is part of an effort to provide students with an opportunity to develop their oral communication and presentation skills.

  • First Prize: $1500 scholarship, and opportunity to represent U of R at the Western Regional Competition (travel, lodging, and registration expenses paid),
  • Second Prize: $1000 scholarship,
  • Third Prize: $500 scholarship

This year, the final will be in March, 2018

GSA Poster Competition

Presenting research is always a great opportunity for personal and professional development. To this end, the URGSA Execs have organized the Fall 2017 Poster Competition on November 6th 2017. This event will allow students who submit abstracts, to prepare and present their research in a visual format. All students will be evaluated, and this feedback will assist them in preparing for future postercompetitions. If you are new to conferences, poster presentations are a great first step as viewers will walk around reading all the different posters, and ask the presenters questions about the poster.

The competition date and time will be announced soon! Stay tuned!
